Kaeng Krajan National Park, located on the eastern slope of the Tenasserim Mountain Range at the border of Burma (Myanmar). It occupies the western half of Phetchaburi Province (Amphur Nong Ya Plong and Amphur Kaeng Krajan) and the Amphur Hua Hin, Prajuabkirikan Province, it covers an area of 2,914 sq.km (about 720,000 acres), the largest national park in Thailand. The national park was designated the 28th national park of Thailand on June 12, 1981.

 
Topography / Flora and Fauna
The topography covers the forest and the dam; area of 45 sq.km (about 11,100 acres). The over dam complex mountain chain including the Tanawsri mountain, located between Thailand and Myanmar frontier. The vastly forest upper the Kaeng Krajan Dam is on complicated mountain ranges which the highest peak is 1,200 meters above sea level and approximately high 500 meter above sea level. Most of the mountains are Granite Mountain, few are Limestone Mountains, and many are full of fluoride. And also most of the area is covered by rain forest so that is the source of Phetchaburi river and Pranburi river. Due to the high humidity of evergreen forest there are many economical valuable trees such as Afzelia, Hopea sp., Dipterocarpus sp., Lagerstroemia sp., Pterocarpus macrocarpus, Aquilaria and many mores. Wild life is elephant, gaur, banteng, barking deer, gibbon, wild pig and birds.
 

Bird Watching
Kaeng Krajan National Park is one of the best bird watching site in the Western, and is one of the five remarkable bird watching sites in Thailand. The best period for bird watching is from May to December, encounter the residents and the weather here is suitable for bird watching.
It also hosts more than 400 species of birds, including 6 species of hornbill, many of which are rarely found in other areas, examples being, Pittas, Broadbills, Crested Jay, Plain-pouched Hornbill, Brown Hornbill, Pin-tailed Parrotfinch, especially Ratchet-tailed Treepie can found in this area only.

 
 

DUSKY BROADBILL
Scientific Name: Corydon sumatranus
Family: Eurylainidae
Description and status: Blackish body with reddish pink bill and orbital skin. Buffy throat patch, white wing patch and white tips to tail feathers.
Voice: ky-ee ky-ee ky-ee ky-ee…
Range: SE Asia, Myanmar, Thailand.
Status: Uncommon resident.
Habitat: Evergreen forest  and mixed deciduous forest.

 
   
 

BANDED BROADBILL
Scientific Name: Eurylaimus javanicus
Family: Eurylainidae
Description and status: From Black-and-red Broadbill by yellow spotting on wings and upperparts; paler vinous red underparts; entirely turquoise-blue bill.
Voice: wheeoo, kyeeow, keowrr, keek-eek-eek…
Range:SE Asia, Myanmar, Thailand.
Status: Uncommon to fairly common resident.
Habitat: Evergreen forest and mixed deciduous forest in the vicinity of streams.

 
   
 

BLACK-AND-RED BROADBILL
Scientific Name: Cymbirhynchus macrorhynchos
Family: Eurylainidae
Description and status: Blackish upperparts with white wing stripe. Crimson-maroon rump and underparts, with narrow black breast band. Upper mandible turquoise-blue, lower mandible yellowish.
Voice: kyeew-kyeew-kyeew-kyeew…
Range: SE Asia, S Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia.
Status: Rare resident.
Habitat: Evergreen forest and wooded secondary growth along the edge of mangroves.

 
   
 

RED-BEARDED BEE-EATER
Scientific Name: Nyctyornis amictus
Family: Meropidae
Description and status: Large size (32 cm). Mainly green plumage with shaggy red throat and breast patch, lilac forecrown.  Underside of tail pale orage-yellow with a broad blackish terminal band. Female: red extends to a small patch above base of bill.
Voice: kakakakakakaow.
Range: SE Asia, S Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia.
Status: Fairly common resident.
Habitat: Evergreen forest.

 
   
 

BLACK-THIGHED FALCONET
Scientific Name: Microhierax fringillarius
Family: Falconidae
Description and status: Narrower white supercilium which extends only behind eye and does not join with smaller white forehead patch. Black flanks and outside to thighs.
Voice: -
Range: SE Asia, S Thailand, Malaysia.
Status: Fairy common resident.
Habitat: Forest clearings, secondary growth.

 
   
 

BROWN HAWK-OWL
Scientific Name: Ninox scutulata
Family: Strigidae
Description and status: Slim and long-tailed with a rounded head, which lacks a facial disc. Coarse brown streaks on underparts and broad dark bars on tail enhance its superficial resemblance to and immature Shikra. Yellow eyes.
Voice: hoo-up.
Range: SE Asia.
Status: Common resident and winter visitor.
Habitat: Evergreen forest and deciduous, bamboo secondary growth.
