The olden royal city is surrounded by mountains at the junction of the Mekong and its tributary, the Khan River. In the centre of the city is Mount Phousi with striking views of the adjoining temples and hills.

Luang Pabang is a remote heaven and one of the world's admired heritage sites. It is famous for its historical temples and grand architecture. The temples mostly boast French architecture.

Luang Pabang is an outstanding illustration of the fusion of traditional architecture and Lao urban structures with those built by the European colonial establishment in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its sole, remarkably well-preserved townscape illustrates a key period in the blending of these two diverse cultural traditions.

Wat Xieng Thong is one of the most inspiring temples, adorned with colored glass and gold. Evidence to the fact that it had been the imperial capital until 1975, the royal palace there contains fine artwork and gifts made for former kings.
